Encouraging a Problem Solving Attitude
Encouraging a problem-solving attitude in young people is essential for their success in life. As they grow and develop, they will inevitably face various challenges, whether in school, their personal lives, or the workforce. Therefore, it is crucial to teach them how to approach problems creatively, analyse situations objectively, and find effective solutions.
A small shift, but a really significant and important one will help. Instead of coming up with answers and advice, encourage them to generate their own ideas and solutions. By doing that, we’re showing them that we trust them to come up with their own good ideas and that we trust them to be resourceful, competent human beings.
Here are some key points to consider when promoting a problem-solving attitude in young people:
- Instead of providing answers and solutions, turn their questions into a question that they must answer.
- Trust them to come up with their own solutions and be resourceful and competent.
- Don’t assume that they want you to solve their problems, sometimes they just want to offload.
- Encourage them to think of ways to solve problems by asking them if they want to think up some solutions.
- Create opportunities for them to solve problems and overcome challenges, so they can become more confident and independent problem-solvers.
- Help them develop a problem-solving mindset by speaking to someone who is already good at solving problems.
- Celebrate their successes and provide positive feedback when they overcome challenges on their own.
By fostering a problem-solving mindset from a young age, young people can develop the skills and confidence necessary to tackle any obstacles they may encounter.
